On October 30, a 16-year-old girl was sent to the hospital for her injuries after she was mauled by six dogs at her home in Thousand Oaks. One witness heard screaming from the Thousand Oaks home during the frightening scene. The witness said that the dogs appeared to be on top of the girl and her mother. After the dog attack, both the mother and daughter were transported to Los Robles Hospital.
THE IMPACT OF THE DOG ATTACK
The girl received serious injuries that included “several significant lacerations and dog bites to her head, torso, and arms.” Fortunately, these injuries were not considered life threatening. According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Ron Chips, the teen’s mother suffered minor injuries.
“I went out there three times trying to divert the dogs away,” explained the witness. “They chased me. I got back in the gate, and they went right back onto them and they just continued.”
EMERGENCY PERSONNEL TO THE RESCUE
Around 3:30 p.m. that Sunday, emergency personnel were called and arrived at the home on the 100 block Manzanita Lane. Ventura County Fire and Los Angeles County Animal Services also arrived at the scene. According to the VC Star, Thousand Oaks contracts animal services with LA County and police services with Ventura County.
To scare away the dogs, deputies and firefighters used several firefighting tools. They also attempted to blast multiple sirens towards the dogs. Ultimately, one deputy was forced to use pepper spray to get the dogs off the 16-year-old girl and her mother.
WHAT WERE THE TYPE OF DOGS?
The dogs were identified as a type of mastiff called cane corso. The sheriff’s captain said that the animals were owned by the teen’s family and were impounded.
According to Fox 11, the mother and daughter were leaving their house and attempting to keep the dogs inside before they were attacked.
Our hearts go out to the teenage girl and her mother. We wish them both a healthful and speedy recovery.
